Cafesociety Freetown Project

Project Lead: Cafesociety

Throughout 2006 and 2007, film-makers Jon Robson and Murray Clark, together with journalist Matt Stephenson – all members of Hull-based media and education organisation Cafesociety.org - have been working closely with Creative Partnerships Hull, the British Council, the Freetown Society and Wilberforce 2007 to develop a variety of educational resources looking at the lives of young people in Freetown and Hull. more »

This CD features 19 slavery–related songs, together with six short narratives. The accompanying booklet gives a brief background history. Contributors include individual singers and musicians, together with students from local schools and colleges and local choirs. more »

When slavery itself was finally abolished in 1833, over £20,000,000 had to be paid by the British Government in compensation to the slave owners
