Grassroots presents a welcome return to Hull for superlative singer/songwriter/guitarist Nick Harper who plays at The Lamp in Hull on Wednesday 16th May, as part of his “Plan 9 from Harperspace” Tour.

Son of the legendary UK singer-songwriter Roy Harper, Nick has played the guitar from the age of 10 and was surrounded by the likes of Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and Dave Gilmour as he grew up.

Since he performed his first solo gig at The Lamp in Hull over 10 years ago he has been dazzling audiences and reviewers alike with this heady mix of virtuosity, boyish charm, showmanship and sheer bravado.

Nick is not new to Grassroots, having delighted old and new fans on the free festival’s main stage in Pearson Park in 2002.

It is particularly fitting that Nick is playing in Hull in 2007 – 200 years since the abolition of the slave trade – as he has included a tribute to William Wilberforce on his latest album ‘Treasure Island’. He explained “The title track is a celebration of the liberal tradition that runs through the history of these islands and Wilberforce plays no small part. There is a reference to the abolition of slavery in the song and also a picture of Wilberforce on the CD cover alongside other social/political and cultural ‘treasures’ of which this country should be proud.”

“If you’ve never seen [Harper] live, you’re missing out on one of the musical phenomenons of our age.” Rob Adams, Herald (Glasgow), 17 October 2003

“It’s all very wacky, but all very wonderfully English; kind of like John Betjeman with a guitar.” Julian Piper, Guitarist, February 2006

“Nick Harper is living proof that beyond the linear mainstream, vital talent is at work proving that all is not lost in today’s musical climate. For the few aficionados out there, Nick has exceeded himself beyond all that has gone before. An uncategorisable, eclectic, passionate success.” Barnaby Smith, musicOMH.com

A warning from History

When slavery itself was finally abolished in 1833, over £20,000,000 had to be paid by the British Government in compensation to the slave owners
